News » Monteath & Powys Wins "NSW Excellence in Surveying and Spatial Information -
              People and Community"

Monteath & Powys won the Institution of Surveyors NSW and the Association of Consulting Surveyors 2006 "NSW Excellence in Surveying and Spatial Information - People and Community" for its contribution in the project to locate the first coal mines in Newcastle (Coal River Working Party) and develop new written and video histories of Fort Scratchley.

The Coal River Working Party was formed in February 2003 in order to channel University and commercial expertise towards investigating and understanding the history of a portion of historic Newcastle East End and Newcastle Harbour foreshore. The project received contributions from Local, State and Federal Governments as well as the University of Newcastle and involved commercial interests including Monteath & Powys.

The overall vision was to create an interpretative centre to express Newcastle's unique Aboriginal heritage, convict and industrial heritage and develop a management plan for the entire site by the 200th anniversary of the permanent settlement at 'Coal River'. www.newcastle.edu.au/coalriver
