Wins “NSW Excellence in Surveying & Spatial Information
- People & Community"
Monteath & Powys won the Institution of Surveyors NSW
and the Association of Consulting Surveyors 2006 “NSW
Excellence in Surveying and Spatial Information - People &
Community “ for its contribution in the project to locate
the first coal mines in Newcastle (Coal River Working Party)
and develop new written and video histories of Fort Scratchley.
The Coal River Working Party was formed in February 2003 in
order to channel University and Commercial expertise towards
investigating and understanding the history of a portion of
historic Newcastle East End and Newcastle Harbour foreshore.
The project received contributions from Local, State and Federal
Governments as well as the University of Newcastle and involved
commercial interests including Monteath & Powys.
The overall vision was to create an interpretative centre
to express Newcastle's unique Aboriginal heritage,convict
and industrial heritage and develop a management plan for
the entire site by the 200th anniversary of the permanent

John Monteath and Robert Powys started Monteath & Powys
over 50 years ago and John’s son Robert has followed

Stephen Barr Manager Planning Wins "NSW Surveyor Generals
International Fellowship-Surveying & Spatial Information”
Stephen Barr, the recently appointed Manager of the Monteath
& Powys Planning Division, won the ”NSW Surveyor Generals
International Fellowship-Surveying and Spatial Information”
at the Sydney Hilton Hotel, Friday 29 September 2006. This Fellowship
is valued at $15,000 and allows Stephen to study overseas to
further his knowledge and appreciation of global challenges
that face the surveying profession.
Stephen Barr is a Registered Surveyor and Certified Practising
Planner and expects to visit;
1. Thailand to observe their land title systems, how the conversion
from native title to a more formal land title occurs and improvements
to the Thai land title systems.
2. USA high growth city centres (such as Boston) to determine
how local authority and local surveyors are dealing with the
issuing of land titles in mixed-use buildings.
3. Scandinavian cities to study local council land holdings
and public access to private land.
Stephen explains the benefits of this fellowship:
“It will improve my understanding of the importance of
a robust land title system, clarify my role as a surveyor and
improve global solutions to surveying challenges.”
Within Monteath and Powys Planning Division, Stephen manages
planning activities that include statements of environmental
effects, comprehensive planning studies, environmental impact
statements, co-ordination of environmental studies, re-zoning
submissions and land development applications. His experience
and expertise contributes to the one-stop shop land development
services that Monteath & Powys offers to its extensive commercial/industrial
client base.
